Birthday Card 2006

Sammy you were so pleased to have everything set up. It was inspiration to write a poem for your birthday card.

I like rockin’ on with Jackson Browne

and playing my harp all over Newtown.

I’ve got a new sound system that’s just the thing

to get my music in full swing.

Plus a new computer set up by a mate,

look out Australia I’m feeling great.

Now that I am totally wired

listening to good music I feel so inspired

to write great songs about my life

with stories describing all sorts of strife.

With my new computer and my guitar

I’m set to be Australia’s brightest MONSTAR!

Hangi at Mick Marino's

I couldn't help but write a poem about this incident at 4am at Mick's place in 2008.

Sammy you always called Mick Mario. You are probably the only person on the planet to get away with that one.

Mick put on a hangi

To celebrate Jack’s birthday

Their mate Sammy has a guitar

So they invited him to play

The night kicked along merrily

People came and they went

While Sammy played his guitar

He was happy and content

He was having a good time

Singing and playing songs

With a belly full of food and wine

He was truly humming along

It was as he went to leave

That it all came undone

He lost his footing near the hungi pit

And landed on his bum

Luckily for Sammy

He landed in a tray

And not in the open fire

It must have been his lucky day

But that wasn’t the last of his woes

As he went to go

He was jammed in the cooking cage

He created quite a show

When the boys finally stopped laughing

They got up to lend him a hand

Lucky again for Sammy

They weren’t too drunk to stand

With some heaving and some swearing

And a bloke on either side

They pulled him from the hangi pit

And released his trapped backside

Moon Mad

You often joke Sammy about locking yourself in on a full moon. I wrote this in 2009 with you in mind.

The moon in the sky is big and round

As it rises it triggers the sound

Of a carnival going on in my head

"Come and party" the voices said

I went off to join the fun

Partying until I saw the sun

When I should have stayed in bed

Ignored the voices in my head

As I travelled through the night

Taking in the glorious sight

Of fairies, pixies and goblins galore

Coaxing me on to the dance floor

"You're a superstar" the voices said

It's a carnival going on in my head

As I move and groove and sing and shout

It's a great feeling to be out

Under the full moon that's big and round

Partying to the loud sound

Of a carnival going on in my head

When I should have stayed in bed

The voices start getting louder and louder

As the moon it gets rounder and rounder

The whole night is full of light

Drinking it in such a glorious sight

I can't help but join the fun

Partying until the rise of the sun

A superstar I really am

Dancing and singing as loud as I can

With fairies, pixies and goblins galore

Shaking it out on the dance floor

Moving and grooving, acting real cool

I don't care if I look a fool

There's a carnival going on in my head

I should have stayed in bed

The moonlight is such a beautiful sight

I have to stay under it all night

70th Birthday

The poem on your 70th birthday sign.

My friend is known as Magic Sam

he likes playing harp with whoever he can.

He also enjoys playing guitar

and listening to blues music while driving his car.

Music DVD’s are a regular treat,

his favourite TV show is Heartbeat.

He likes telling stories about his life

with a narrative that describes all sorts of strife.

Whiskey is his favourite drop,

JB Hi-Fi his most frequented shop.

Rollies are his favourite smoke

even more so when they’re laced with dope.

Now he’s turning seventy

I’m glad he’s doing splendidly.

He’s had a bit of a rough time of late,

it’s good to see he’s feeling great.

He’s a big, happy, kind hearted man

HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY MAGIC SAM!

Quoted Words

I was watching a documentary titled Beatles in India on the night of Saturday 18 September 2021 when this line jumped out at me...

"He told us ah not to get overwhelmed by grief and to whatever thoughts we have on Brian to keep them happy because any thoughts we have on him will travel to him wherever he is."

John Lennon

True Words

Sammy passed away at 2.40 am on Saturday 18 September 2021.

Due to a communication error at the hospital, Glenn wasn't advised of Sammy's passing until 10am Monday 20 September 2021.

In the morning on the day of Sammy's passing, Glenn took their mother Eileen's ashes that Sammy had been holding on to and scattered them at Kingscliff beach.

A poignant moment made even more so when Glenn received the news on Monday that Sammy had passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning.
